My guess is they are California real estate developers who believe in Mann made global warming and are trying to get in early for Nunavut or Greenland beach front property.
They look to have been extremely fortunate. They may be only hours away from being totally crushed. Fortunately for them I’m not part of the Canadian coastguard. I would have left them to sink with their boat. Ther has been enough info out there for them to know it was a stupid expedition.
