Apparently the Mississippi River must be dried up, but no one noticed.
Empirical evidence does not lend much support to the notion that climate is headed precipitately toward more extreme heat and drought. The drought of 1999 covered a smaller area than the 1988 drought, when the Mississippi almost dried up. And 1988 was a temporary inconvenience as compared with repeated droughts during the 1930s “Dust Bowl” that caused an exodus from the prairies, as chronicled in Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath.

Alot of the drought conditions can be traced directly to the lack of hurricane activity in the gulf. They squeal no matter what the conditions.

The Mississippi river still looks normal to us St. Louis residents as of last Saturday. I don’t think we saw much of any change with the river levels this summer at all. In fact, our trees are just now starting to get their fall colors already as of about 2 weeks ago. Because the trees budded a month early, the trees here seem to think that it’s late September instead of late August..
