It makes me sick just thinking about it. What a waste. That was when music was music.
That was a great era for music lovers. So were the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Popular music is a reflection of society in general. The age of innocence has been left far behind us … and now we are left with Miley Cyrus and the rappers. I remember one episode of the Cosby Show when Dr. Huxtable (Cosby) was refusing to buy tickets to a concert for his teenage daughter. The daughter said: “But dad … the world’s greatest singer will be there!” Dr. Huxtable answered: “Really? … I didn’t know that Sarah Vaughn was in town!”
What’s it about –
In Late January this year we went to the Kato Ballroom in Mankato MN which is 10 miles from here.
It was the 55 year celebration of when the group played there.
From there they went up to Duluth/Superior where Bobby Dylan had briefly talked to Buddy Holly and has said it was one of the greatest influences of his life.
They then went to Clear Lake, Iowa which is just south of the MN border and as always people of my vintage said they really had the place rockin’ — Then tragedy and Buddy’s wife blamed it on herself because it was one of the few times she was not with him. She was at the beginning of her pregnancy and not up to travel. We have been told that she has never been able to bring herself to go to his grave site.
Ritchie V. sister was at the Kato and sang a few songs for us. She said she is still in contact with
‘Donna’ who was a little older than young Ritchie. Donna, now married is a very nice lady, and really morned Ritchie’s death.
One other note from Paul McCartney. A factor in why the Beatles chose their name was to honor of Buddy Holly because his band was called ‘The Crickets’
