Lack of coal will kill a lot more children than too much coal.
The way the researchers would probably do it, you stuff a rat with a ton of coal and check its vitals.
They showed that cyclamates and saccharin were bad by stiffing a dry powder mixture of the two sweeteners down rats throats. The rats had problems, mostly ulcers (too dry). The dose was equivalent to 7,000 12 oz bottles of soda a day. Hmmm. You could also try to pour 84,000 oz (1312 gallons) into a rat (or a human) and show that they explode!
