    The pair crossed the Antarctic two years ago and hope to become the first men to circle the globe by way of the two poles.

    Maybe I am too thick, but what does the reporter mean? I guess they mean sailing (as opposed to walking or flying) and probably along a longitude, right?

    I need a diagram or something.

      They had to be on solid surface because there is not water at the south pole. They were complaining about ice break up which would rule out sailing for that leg of the journey. It was probably a combination of methods along two longitude meridians.
