Contrary to the propaganda careful research published by the IPCC and the EPA, snow cover in North America has been steadily increasing over the last twenty years.

    When talking about weather events the word Steadily is not a proper descriptor. Increasing! Yes! Randomly would be a better fit! Smoothing and trends destroy some of the signals that define weather.

    Helsinki Snow Depth Still Abnormally High

    The AccuWeather.com historical data for Helsinki, Finland, begins with the year 1994. Thus, this is the 18th April 1 that we have data to cover. Of these, eight years had April start without measurable snow cover. A further three of these years had measurable snow cover on April 1, but not on April 2–it had melted.

    The highest April 1 snow depth for any previous year (since 1994) was registered last year, when it was 14 inches (36 cm). Right behind, April 1, 1996, had 13 inches (34 cm).

    This year, snow depth on the first of the month was far beyond what was observed heretofore, at least since 1994. On that day, the snow depth was 28 inches, or 71 cm. Essentially, it was twice that of April 1, 2010.

    Snow blocks elk migration from Sun River game range

    Deep snow along the Rocky Mountain Front is keeping elk from migrating off the Sun River Wildlife Management Area west of Augusta to their traditional calving grounds and wildlife managers plan to delay the opening of the WMA by a week or two.

    As many as 2,500 elk remain on the Sun River WMA while there should be fewer than half that many at this time. The elk migrate to the WMA in late fall and spend winter there. Then they head back into the high country basins to calve.

    The Sun River WMA is scheduled to open May 15 at noon and typically crowds of people line up at the gate to rush in and search for shed antlers. The elk usually are long gone by then, but not this year.

    “Heavy snow both in the backcountry and along the western edge of the game range has blocked their migration routes,” said Gary Bertellotti, the FWP Region 4 Supervisor.

    Elk have their calves in late May or early June but game managers want them to do that in the backcountry.

    “Their drive is to get to their traditional calving grounds,” Bertellotti said. “They want to go but because of snow depths, the passes are impassable at this time.”
