Australia has long been described as a continent of drought, interspersed with short periods of flooding.
Here in Florida, months and years with average rainfall are not what is most common.
Rains tend to be episodic, and many years are very dry or very wet. Even during the rainy season, in which we get between 7 and 10 inches (depending on what exact part of the state) per month or so, many locations will get much of their monthly total in a handful of downpours.
Droughts always end in floods. I have been saying that for many years.
While it may not be strictly true, it sure does happen a lot.
One reason may be…it takes a flood to end a drought.
But another is that long term averages are long term averages, because things tend to even out to the long term average over the long term.
On the average.
The real crime that the NWS perpetrates is their fraudulent use of “normal” for average. This lets them fool the public into believing anything on a daily, weekly, monthly, etc. basis that is above or below “normal” is an aberration that can be attributed to global warming.
