The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane

The 1935 Labor Day hurricane made landfall in Florida with winds of 185 MPH. It was the only hurricane to hit the US with a barometric pressure lower than 900 mbar. It was one of only three category five hurricanes to make landfall in the US (the other two happened in 1969 and 1992.)

Grist is hoping that a hurricane stronger than Katrina hits Florida. Too bad they weren’t there 75 years ago to live the dream.

    I think that should read “lower than 900 mbar”. 990 isn’t very impressive. 😉

    That damage looks much like the Alabama tornado disaster. Are they sure that wasn’t a tornado?

    I am waiting for the Cat 5 that is aimed at NYC. It is not a matter of “IF” just When. The “Proper” Atmospheric conditions have happened before and will happen again.
