CO2 Reaches Nightmare Levels

The government reports that the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has increased by 1:10,000 over the last century. That would be like packing an extra ten people into the Rose Bowl!

You said, “…the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has increased by 1:10,000 over the last century.” While that is strictly true, it minimizes the change observed. The accepted concentration before industrial emission began is about 280 ppmv (parts per million by volume). That works out to 2.8:10,000. The daily average level on Mauna Loa recently went over 400 ppmv. That works out to 4:10,000. (The average over the week or month or year has NOT surpassed this however. Also, May is typically the month which shows the highest CO2 concentration, so we should expect CO2 to decrease until about October.)

So, the amount in the atmosphere has increased from 280 to 400 ppmv. That is a 120 ppmv increase, or a (120/280*100 =) 43% increase. CO2 is a potent, long-lived greenhouse gas. The physics of it’s effects are fairly plain. An increase of 43% in a century is alarming.

That CO2 was ever as low as 280 ppm is alarming.

    • He’s right Steve. It’s like packing 14.3 people into the Rose Bowl.

    • Me says:

      Someone doesn’t understand PPM!

    • NoMoreGore says:

A 43% increase in a miniscule trace amount (of a wholly beneficial nutrient crucial to plant life) is NOT alarming. It is reassuring. C02 IS NOT a POTENT greenhouse gas. Try Water Vapor if you wish to observe potency. The physics of CO2’s effects ARE fairly plain….. and quite insignificant.

      • Me says:

If you look at the % by volume increase it’s like .3% Pretty alarming isn’t it!

      • JayTee says:

Water vapor is a potent greenhouse gas, at 0.4 to 4% by volume. Without it the earth would be 30 degrees C cooler. It is also however a very reactive greenhouse gas. It reacts to the current temperature and has a lifetime in the atmosphere of a few days, at best, before training out. The physics of CO2 are plain, well understood, and far from insignificant.

      • Complete nonsense. Temperatures in the tropics would be about 1-2C lower if there was no CO2.

      • Me says:

So JT knows the difference and still bullshitting! Noted! 😆 I didn’t forget that time. 😉

    • R. de Haan says:

43% from almost noting is still almost nothing. The measured CO2 levels count for the entire biosphere. Our contribution to the biosphere (What our corrupt scientists have called Athropogenic Contribution) is only 3%. Besides that the planet isn’t warming but in a long term cooling cycle. There is however a positive which brings us to the other lie, the lie of Peak Oil. Peak Oil doesn’t exist. We have carbon fuels available for the next thousands of years, time enough to find more sophisticated energy resources. As for food production, no problem either. We have plenty of food to serve double the current population. Now tell me what is alarming about that? Just relax, enjoy the weather and your life. Nobody can save the planet and those who say they will are after your money and your life. Just avoid them as the black plague and don’t vote them into office next time. Cheers.

Understand the Hpa level it is measured at and then ask what about the concentrations at 600, 400, 300, 100 right on up to 10Hpa…
You may also ask what intermediates and radicals have been observed throughout these heights and what effects and interactions influence the particles within each of our planets spheres…
Climatologists using modeling should be banned until they can recreate our actual tropospheric patterns, as measured and of the past.
Raging assholes with models are killing us, not the climate or man (but maybe Mann)…

    • gator69 says:

“The notion of low pre-industrial CO2 atmospheric level, based on such poor knowledge, became a widely accepted Holy Grail of climate warming models. The modelers ignored the evidence from direct measurements of CO2 in atmospheric air indicating that in 19th century its average concentration was 335 ppmv[11] (Figure 2). In Figure 2 encircled values show a biased selection of data used to demonstrate that in 19th century atmosphere the CO2 level was 292 ppmv[12]. A study of stomatal frequency in fossil leaves from Holocene lake deposits in Denmark, showing that 9400 years ago CO2 atmospheric level was 333 ppmv, and 9600 years ago 348 ppmv, falsify the concept of stabilized and low CO2 air concentration until the advent of industrial revolution [13].”

Good stuff–the second state to do so after Alabama. BUT, did the Governor sign it? There are three states that have approved the legislation, but are awaiting their governor’s signatures. Perhaps we need to start petitioning and picketing the Masonic Halls.

      • Me says:

Take the initiative and do so then if thats the case!

      • Me says:

I bet that is a no!

        No response thar, I. lou?

I’ve been on it, Cuz! From the mayor, to borough council, to the redeveloper, to the NJ State Senate Fezident, Steve Sweeney, here in good, ol’ Gwassbowo, NJ (actually, the new name of the town is Rowanville). That’s the reason my wife and I haven’t had our home/business stolen from us yet (but, we’re the last ones). Speaking truth to power isn’t too well received here in South Jersey–especially when the “power” people can’t do anything more noble in life than make meatball sandwiches for the 1967 LBJ-Kosygin “let’s adapt the Communist Manifesto so it fits America” summit. Of course, the meme is forever “Global (i.e., Communist) to Local,” or, if you will, “Let’s plunder the hard-working American middle class because we’re lazy, jealous, but Satan-smart enough to find a way to steal their lifestyles from them because they’re so unsuspecting and we’re so nice.” Here’s where the stupidity begins and ends here in Gwassbowo, NJ–a group of idiots that would sell their souls to “look good” for EPA, state and/or federal grant monies, but who created the problem to begin with. It’s a great article that argues for more restrictive immigration policies IN THE 1930’s!

Have you been up late smoking crack again, “Me?” Please take thought of the wife and kids. I do, however, enjoy your posts on NJ.com.

    • I. Lou Minotti says:

Did you read the article, Joe, or do you know it by heart?

  4. I did want to mention how loud I was laughing when I saw this post Steve. I had a major outburst of laughter today, one of those “you owe me a keyboard” moments. Not saying it was top 10, but definitely top 100 stuff. For people who study climate, your humor is priceless. Thanks again.

The BBC is crying loudly (for the last 7 hours) on the world service that mans done nothing to stop the GHGs or CO2 climbing over 400ppm. Roger Harrabin sounds almost weeping with joy.
News? What news. So why is it so f***ing cold BBC?

No blue cloud of steam yet! Me and the rest of us are still here. 😆

    • R. de Haan says:

BBC…just forget all about. They have been removed from my favorite media list a long time ago. Should we worry about that. I think so. After the thinnest book in the world which is titled “One Thousand Years of German Humor my favorite media list comes second.
      That can’t be healthy.
