The US government desperately needs more money. What better way to get it than to introduce a new tax that will actually be supported by Democratic voters? Even if Obama thinks catastrophic global warming is BS, I can’t see how he can pass up an attempt to grab that pot of gold.
On the downside, it will damage the US economy.

Who knows what would happen? They are pretty desperate.
Obama already blew his lie about taxes. So he can heap more on with a Carbon tax. And the low information voters will not see a tax increase because they pay none – and any price increase will be offset by an increase in government subsidies.
