    The temperatures referred to in this newspaper report are NOT for Sydney, but locally at Broken Hill. Broken Hill is some 1100km (700 miles) west of Sydney, in a desert environment. Temperatures reach 40 C (104 F) on average five days each summer.

The maximum temperature for 1st January 1906 is listed at just 20.5C (68.9F) and 18.5C (65.3F) for 2nd January 1906, and a minimum overnight temperature of 14.6C (58.28F) for 3rd January 1906.
