Real Science Was Hacked

I am fine and will be posting on this site in the future.

No doubt this looks like a publicity stunt, but I had nothing to do with it.

  1. omnologos says:

    Unless you’re the hacker? 😎

  2. Kaboom says:

I was worried there for a moment but the announcement email looked fishy. Maybe let Anthony Watts know you’re ok to spread the word?

  3. Otter says:

We need to know who, and we need to spread their name far and wide.

  4. I had a feeling it was foul-play. Strengthen up them passwords! And good to hear you’re still in the land of the livid. You old codger!

  5. Kaboom says:
This was the link I was sent in the announcement “newsletter”. Might be useful in forensics of the crime.

  6. Scott says:

Glad to hear you’re safe. The e-mail I got looked suspicious…considering your real name wasn’t given and the 81 years of age they reported for you. I know of several 80+ men that bike a lot, but as much as you do?…hard to believe.

  7. TinyCO2 says:

At 81 all that cycling would be very impressive.

  8. jimash1 says:

I thought that looked odd. All the lurkers came out of the woodwork.
Wave at me so I know its you.
Are you sure you’re ok ?

  9. Eric Barnes says:

    Good to hear!

  10. diogenes100 says:

    Thanks goodness this isn’t real!
My selfish reason: I am continually referring people to your website.
I note the British spelling of the word “centre” in the hoax – perhaps a small clue.
    Stay healthy!!

  11. Anything is possible says:

Thought it was some kind of hoax – the “81 years old” and “dying in Dallas, Texas” didn’t add up.

    Glad you’re fit and well.

Maybe you should get Steve Mosher to investigate this – he has a pretty good track record.

  12. Eric Barnes says:

Not sure what to make of the hackers post? I can think of a lot more effective agw propaganda. Is that supposed to pass for some kind of intimidation?

  13. Good to see that reports of your demise are premature. In future, check the obits column of the NY Times upon awakening. If you’re not there, carry on with your day. Best wishes for a longer life.

  14. Latitude says:

LOL….unless you got a lot older and moved….
At first I thought it was another one of your “sounds like” posts………….
the activist wife was a nice touch though…………

  15. diogenes100 says:

    Thank goodness!
I note the British spelling of the word “centre” – perhaps a clue.
Stay healthy – we need your revolutionary spirit:
“In a time of deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” ― George Orwell

  16. Josualdo says:

I feel much better like that.

  17. Alvin says:

Mark Twain: The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated

  18. u.k.(us) says:

    Are you dead, or alive.
    I need to know.

  19. Eric Barnes says:

The sheer number of Steven Goddards out there set me back a little bit as I was looking for evidence/counter-evidence.

according to Steve’s old site, he’s alive & well & this is the work of a hacker

  21. jimash1 says:

“the hacker is holding up comments on”

Yup. I am getting a distinct vibe. But I won’t post it here .emailify me for my wild-ass guess .

  22. I tried to confirm the details before making a confidential [i hope] reply…one comment from “Jonathan Smith” stated he’d been on the phone with Steven just prior to a police computer raid. Hopefully this is another part of this hoax. My thanks to Marc Morano for correcting this error to me and my limitted CC list on this issue. Best wishes for continued AGW agitation !

  23. JB says:

    You are 81?

  24. Douglas Hoyt says:

Not sure if this is related, but for the last week or I have been blocked from accessing Perhaps the hacker created an IP address block.

    • Eric Barnes says:

I’ve had this problem as well. Real-Science is probably an appealing target for quite a number of AGW zealots. Careful reconsideration of where is hosted would seem like a prudent thing IMO.

      • Douglas Hoyt says:

Concerning my IP block, it was malwarebytes that reported it and said it was coming from

      • Interesting. I’m not sure what is, but I have seen numerous error messages from them this week too when I tried to post.

      • jimash1 says:

Well tis interesting that when I ask my browser for the “web inspector” it all comes up cloudflare, and since it is a utility designed to make it easier
I assumed you were using it, but since you have never heard of it….. ?

      • Eric Barnes says:

I’m running w/o antivirus software and have had the occasional problem connecting to, even when other sites seemed to function normally.
This may be associated w/ site maintenance, but it has happened a disconcerting number of times over the past few months.

      • Eric Barnes says:

If you look at the source of the web page, cloudflare is accessed when the page loads. This explains the problems with cloudflare (and perhaps some of the other problems). It’s getting pretty common for there to be a lot of reference to external sites on blogs for advertising/tracking/functionality, etc.

  26. Steve Brown says:

Hooray – so you did see Real beat Barca

  27. Josh says:

Well, very glad you are ok! Fakegate, now this. Seems a very desperate stunt, and a bit weird too.

  28. Earle Williams says:

Eh, why the moderation? Nothing there you can’t get from any WHOIS server.

  29. Tucci78 says:

The more we get to know the leftie-lusers, the more credible seems their desire for breitbarting the voices of reason opposed to them.

  30. A Lovell says:

Whew! I’m afraid I believed it, and I’m feeling a little foolish. I don’t usually take stuff at face value any more. However, on the bright side, at least you now know how sorely you would be missed!

I’m looking forward to the unmasking of the hacker.

  31. kbray in california says:

Steve, I posted condolences over there earlier which were approved.

This one below did not make it.

Why is Steven Goddard still commenting at his old site?

He sounds alive and well over there.

Nice to know you are appreciated by many.

However a few odd others prefer you in the next world.
This event is probably classified as a crime.
AGW is what is really dead, thankfully you are not.

  32. Paul Maynard says:

Ah well I fell for it and sent some cash. Duh

  33. kirkmyers says:

This is not surprising at all. Not at all. If one can’t win on the science, then resort to subterfuge. It’s another indication that we’re dealing with sociopaths. The NASA scientists who recently complained about lack of science at NASA GISS-NCDS understand what is happening.

We are dealing with a new, and not advanced, global warming secular religion. And if you don’t genuflect before them, you’re an apostate. It’s all silly nonsense, but not in their uncritical minds.

The Green Religion is scary. The government school system is programming impressionable young children to not think. And pouring billions of dollars into this junk science and those who promulgate the stuff will be the death of us all.

Dwight Eisenhower warned us. We’ve seen lately what happens with “government funded” science.

  34. DERise says:

Thot that smelled rotten when I read it. Glad it wasn’t true. Looks like you stike a nerve, keep it up!

  35. kbray in california says:

My 10:14 pm comment is stuck in moderation…. is that you Steve?

  36. I smelt something off right away.

“The guy is dead,….if you want to write for real-science, please contact,…”

    What the…!!! Who writes that?

And then, there was the …”Paramedics were called to the scientist’s home at about midnight after he stopped breathing. Goddard was taken to the medical centre early in the morning, and paramedics administered CPR in the ambulance. He did not regain consciousness and was reported dead about two hours later.”

    1) How come there was a medical ‘centre’ at Dallas?
    2) If the paramedics performed CPR in the ambulance – unsuccessfully – death would be declared upon admission, or shortly afterward. Not after 2 freaking hours, you crackpots.

    But then, who knows!

Thinking thus, I dozed into my afternoon nap.

    • DirkH says:

““The guy is dead,….if you want to write for real-science, please contact,…”
      What the…!!! Who writes that?”

Exactly. Didn’t believe it for a moment. I went there right after WUWT made the announcement but it was completely unbelievable. Like when Gleick writes strategic memos.

  37. ntesdorf says:

All I can say is “What a relief that Steve is OK!” Give them Hell, Steve!

  38. tckev says:

  39. Jim McGregor-Dawson says:

Last week when this hacking apparently took place; my Malwarebytes program refused entry to the site. So I would suggest everyone who did enter the site at that time, that they check their computer for infections. Keep up the good work Steve.

  40. slimething says:

I thought it was a joke or something at first and didn’t give it much thought; should have remained skeptical after reading JonathanSmith’s BS but figured everyone is chiming in, I should too. Group think is contagious.

The man is 81 years old, rides 10k a year on his bike, has 3 kids and holds down a full time job? No low T with this guy. Hugh Hefner and Bob Dole, eat your heart out. 🙂

Steve, I hope this doesn’t mean the wealth of information won’t be lost at the other site.

  41. Andy DC says:

This was very bazarre. I saw the “announcement” and immediately thought that several things about it did not seen right. Then I commented “please someone tell me that this is a joke.” My c0mment went into moderation and never was posted. Then I started seeing all these condolences from people whose names I had never seen commenting on the site before.

I feel like I just woke up from a nightmare. I am glad that you are OK.

  42. Mervyn says:

I think there is a case for calling in law enforcement agencies to investigate this matter. It has, without doubt, caused much stress to many who read the email and honestly believed the contents.

Death is not a laughing matter. But concocting someone’s death on the internet must surely be the lowest of the lowest.

Anyway, good to see it is not true… after all, the world needs all the Steven Goddards of the world to fight the fight against the many government funded climate change charlatans who are continuously pushing their man-made global warming religion to the masses.

  43. Casper says:

at the first moment, I thought your site had got some technical problems. I couldn’t get in touch wit it. I’m happy you’re OK and your work will be continued. Keep going 😉

  44. Scarface says:

Steve, glad to hear you’re alive and kicking.
This sick and sinister crime will backfire on the perpetrator(s).
I’m shocked. Hope you get your blog back online soon.

  45. pat says:

After Breitbart, the leftwing lunatics feel this is creativity.
While many will pass this off as humor, it is really wishful thinking by the left. Science is the enemy.

  46. Michael D Smith says:

I just figured some guy named Steven Goddard who was 81 died and you posted it. I was surprised to see so many fall for it. Dallas didn’t make sense, nor did 81. 81 would be a bit of a late start for someone doing graphics work on video cards or being a C++ wizard.

I have been seeing strange things on your site for weeks… Even right now, it is saying it is still connecting on the Real-Science tabs (pages never “finish” loading, like a tag is missing or something… There were times that I was getting old pages (like a week old) instead of the new one, but other PC’s were OK. Not sure if that is related.

    But I’m glad you’re OK nonetheless…

  47. Sparks says:

That’s commitment for you, even posting about crappy science from beyond the grave!

I know this site is genuine because I’m still subscribed to it since way before the new ‘.com’ site was setup.
I almost believed it when WUWT posted a headline like this “Real Science Announces the Death of Steve Goddard” But then again I had been on a night out drinking with friends and I read it with blurry eyes during the wee hours of the morning just before I passed out.

  48. P Gosselin says:

Welcome back! Phil Jones’s glee this time was undoubtedly very short-lived.

  49. ozspeaksup says:

hmm..I am REALLY glad youre not deceased:-)
I got the newsletter that had that in it..
    and followed that link.
but oddly the bit about hes dead /new writers didnt show in the screen I saw?

has some f***t also nicked your mailing list?
and do we need to do something to stop abuse of our addys now?

  50. Rogelio says:

Great your still; here what a sick joke. You must really be hurting the AGW camp . The data you present is devastating.

  51. Sandy says:

Why so polite about the trustbreaker?
    Was it a woman?

  52. Latitude says:

…don’t forget to de-moderate everyone so their posts will show

  53. redcords says:

Perfect time to register something like and let whoever it was wither on the vine with RS.

  54. gregole says:

Glad you are back! Just posting so I can see if it will go through as I’ve been having trouble posting since this happened.

  55. David Harrington says:

    Goddardgate anyone?

  56. At least you didn’t get turned into a newt.

  57. John A says:

Do you know what? If I was given the admin password to Real Climate, I’d warn Gavin Schmidt to change the password.

I have no interest in dirty tricks.

  58. JasonR says:

Nietzsche was wrong. Goddard is not dead.

  59. ntesdorf says:

It doesn’t look like a publicity stunt and we are just relieved to hear that you are OK! The hacking must have been going on for a while as weird things have been appearing and occurring.

  60. AndyW says:

Hope you find out who it is Steve. Annoying isn’t it. Someone managed to get into my Amazon account the other day and sent $1600 of vouchers to themselves from my account, I hope they all die horribly. Unlike you who is a fit 81 year old bicyclist!

  61. I gave my missus the keywords, soccer, out for the day, trusted, non political, non climate, temporarily insane, protect them, 81, old man.
She said – ‘it’s his wife you fool’
