You get those because of the mountains, we get them too, but because there are no mountains
and being a biker myself….it was against you on your way back!!
Usually that was the case, but I was going the right direction this time.
chilly day here with strong wind, so took a drive west towards foothills to check out some new routes for riding (wonderful sunny day), but ice,snow,rocks, ….bike stays inside for a while yet…

That front range climate has some wild temperature gyrations.
