Such slogans are still used today.
Why do seemingly rational people often choose tyranny over freedom? How did Lenin, Stalin, or a Hitler come to power?
The tyrant will give away cheap items (bread in Germany, Obamaphones in the US), then promise economic security by proposing to fix the economic and social systems through the manipulation of the laws, markets, industry, and production.
Once the population is hooked the tyrant is free to do what they want. Remove your guns, remove freedoms, then enact and enforce unpopular and unnecessary laws.
It has always ended badly, and this time…

The sequester is still in place though, and affects the new budget ‘deal’. So it isn’t all bad, they did not cave on the sequester.
They will. The Republicans blinked and Obama didn’t. The “deal” is as good as done.
There are no hiring, travel or expense freezes. There are no mandatory staff and facility reductions. No audits have been called. There is however a plan to give federal employees a raise. I am utterly disgusted.
