Arctic Shipping Update

Climate experts say that Northeast and Northwest Passages are open for business, but neither will open up this year.

I have not seen a source or more information on this story of a stuck cruise ship. http://northwestpassage2014.blogspot.com/2014/08/mv-silver-explorer-stuck-in-northwest.html

Open for business the way Solyndra is open for business.

Nothing that Reggie’s blowtorch can’t handle.

somebody is telling a story aren’t they? Perhaps you’d like to tell us where the ship is. On the one hand I see a ship with the name Silver Explorer stuck in the ice, and then on the other I see your picture with green ice free waters. Everybody is going to be looking for this vessel now. Anybody with a satellite phone? Maybe they will wait it out till the ice thaws, like they did at the other pole. I will be saving that pretty picture of green, just in case you told us so.

      • Jim Hunt says:

Are you aware of the difference between the Northwest Passage and the Northern Sea Route, which is sometimes referred to as “the Northeast Passage”? That “pretty picture of green” is of the latter. Here’s the current position of the cruise ship MS Hanseatic in the Laptev Sea, coloured green on the map above:

You will note that my comment above was “stuck in Steve’s moderation queue” for many hours, which does rather spoil the flow of the conversation!

In other words the ship is stuck in a non-existent ice. Brilliant climatist explanation!

Re the cruise ship, it’s supposed to be on a 23 day cruise starting on 9th August from Kangerlussuaq in Greenland to arrive in Nome, Alaska on September 1st. Their planned itinerary can be found at the following link http://www.deluxecruises.com/silversea/silver_explorer/cruises_2014/august_9_september_1.htm

The cruise company has a blog/journal page with daily updates for their voyages. The one for this one can be found at this link http://www.silversea.com/expeditions/voyage-journals/?voyagejournal=7418&voyage=

The updates ceased on day 5, 13th August. Have they been stuck since then, or out of communication?

    • LexingtonGreen says:

Thank you for that link Andy. That is fascinating. No news on a cruise ship stuck in the ice free arctic. I can see that as an inconvenient truth.

  5. rishrac says:

Whether the Arctic is ice free or not is not the question. The question is are these people out of their minds? It’s one thing to have a belief in something, it’s another to prove it with the risk of your life like where they went on a cruise ship. What could go wrong? Did they go to save the drowning polar bears?

  6. rishrac says:

Boat’s finally free as of today Aug 24. Wonder whose on that cruise? I’m sure it was a rip roaring success for AGW. And I was so looking forward to another boat that had to be offloaded. Maybe next year. I’m sure they will try to sail the mythical passage next year. I will not be attending. Pack you parka just in case the ship’s power goes out or something.

FACT – THIS YEAR ALL NWP YACHTS WILL HAVE TO NAVIGATE THROUGH, FRANKLIN AND VICTORIA ELSE LARSEN ALONG WITH EITHER BELLOT STRAIT ELSE PEEL SOUND (DOUBTFUL).
Here is the ice chart: (concentration given in tenths, i.e. 9/10 = 90% dense ice with 10% open water and 2/10 = 20% broken ice with 80% open water)
